ndustria 4.0 and its quasi-synonym Fourth Industrial Revolution, are expressions that call a hypothetical fourth mega-stage of the technical-economic evolution of humanity, counting from the First Industrial Revolution. This fourth stage would have begun recently and its development would be projected towards the third decade of the 21st century. Artificial intelligence is identified as a central element of this transformation, closely related to the growing accumulation of large amounts of data (“big data”), the use of algorithms to process them, and the massive interconnection of digital systems and devices.

This fourth stage, which we cannot yet fully characterize, would correspond to a new way of organizing the means of production. The aim is to set up a large number of «smart factories» («smart factories») capable of greater adaptability to production needs and processes, as well as a more efficient allocation of resources, thus opening the way to a new industrial revolution or Industrial Revolution 4.0.
